Why We Teach the CBSE Curriculum for Understanding, Not Recall

CBSE's current framework is built around competency, not just content — which gives classroom teachers real room to teach a concept before its terminology, and to let a wrong answer become a useful discussion rather than a mark lost. In practice this means a primary maths class might spend a week with counters and number lines before a single worksheet appears, or a Grade VIII science class might run an experiment twice — once to see what happens, and once to explain why — instead of reading the explanation first. It takes longer to reach the same syllabus point this way. We think that's the right trade: a class that understands why an answer is correct carries it into the next topic; a class that only memorised it usually doesn't.
